Calling all LOVE Warriors!

love-warrior-yoga

I believe that LOVE is the most powerful force there is.  Love truly does conquer all.  Let’s not pretend — we ALL have fears of inadequacy. We all have times where we doubt ourselves, our capabilities, or that the good we do outweighs the negativity we experience. WE ARE NOT ALONE in that.  Even though it feels like these darker, shadow feelings separate us from others, it is precisely these experiences that connect us so deeply to one another. Here’s the key…we have to reach out in love to another even in the face of our fears in order to experience the ONE-ness that we are. In our current world, we have to be LOVE Warriors!  What does this have to do with YOGA, you ask? Everything! Yoga is all about real life, conquering the fear in our heads to be more present, and live life more fully on our own terms! If you don’t believe me, then you HAVE to come to my classes to find out: Tuesday nights at 6pm (177 N. 4th St — more contact info on the yoga page you can click at the top of the page).

This weekend I was so deeply inspired by a young woman, Lyla June, whom I found on facebook who was sharing the Love and Truth and Beauty that is her gorgeous self, and shining the Light for other Love Warriors. Here’s an excerpt from what I read, as well as a video link and a link to her exquisite website:

“They say that history is written by the victors, but how can there be a victor when the war isn’t over? The battle has only just begun, and Creator is sending his very best warriors. And this time it isn’t Indians and Cowboys. No, this time it is all the beautiful races of humanity together on the same side, and we are fighting to replace our fear with Love, and this time bullets, arrows, and cannonballs won’t save us. The only weapons that are useful are the weapons of Truth, Faith, and Compassion.”

~ Lyla June

And her beautiful website here: http://www.sodizin.net/

I’m holding you ALL in the Light! May your week be filled with LOVE. May you act with courage even in the face of fear to spread the love of all! ❤

Peace,

jessica

Post-Labor Day Yoga

This week’s Tuesday night yoga class will focus on letting go of the “busy-ness.”  Now, I’m not talking about being lazy here. I’ll be the first to admit that it feels GOOD to get things done — to cross something off your “To-Do” list.  Accomplishment is NOT to be confused with the proverbial “busy-ness” that plagues our lives, our culture, and our society at large.

I’ve been noticing that when I am rushing around I don’t feel good.  At those times when I’m rushing around because I’m running late, my head is spinning, and I’m juggling 8 different things while trying to get out the door, I hate myself.  I hate life. I hate how I react instead of respond, and I hate how I treat my kids in those moments.  In those moments all the joy and love I have for life is sucked out of me, and all I feel is anxiety, fear, my heart pounding, worry, anger. This isn’t how I want my life to be. Nothing about it is how I want to live, feel, think, or be.

I’ve caught myself recently on a few occasions and realized that I’d rather be late than harbor all of those negative feelings that corrupt my life and my kids’ lives.  Very recently I caught myself AGAIN and this time I just had to cancel what we had going on and BE with the fact that we all needed some down time.  What SWEET RELIEF I felt after just making that choice to BREATHE and CHOOSE LOVE!!!

I can only speak for myself, but I think there are many others out there that believe as I do.  I want to live my life, giving attention to what matters most instead of running around giving all my attention to things that don’t matter at all, with the idea that once they are taken care of I can then, finally, focus on what really matters.  Let’s face it, living like that doesn’t EVER make time for those things that matter the most, because when everything else is your priority, then those things that fuel us (AND THAT WE LIVE FOR!!!) always come last.

So…if you feel as I do and want to make a valiant effort to choose what matters most, please join me for yoga this Tuesday evening at 6:00pm. In yoga we do plenty of the “yoga” you see in pictures and videos online, but we also do the real yoga of LIFE! Yoga is WAY more than a pose, it’s a way of living that helps us cultivate the lives we want to BE in. Come check it out!

Why is Yoga so Awesome? And why don’t more people do it?

Pardon me, would you like to have more of any of the following qualities in your life?

yoga-benefits

I’ve been teaching yoga for 20 years and doing massage now for 14, and every single time I give a bodywork/massage session I see patterns of restriction and/or pain that I know would be helped tremendously by yoga. When I say “every single time”, I’m not exaggerating. After almost every session I give my clients instructions for 1-2 specific exercises that they can incorporate daily that I believe will have a dramatically positive effect on their bodies. I also let them know about the weekly yoga classes that I teach, and invite them to come.  Most of them don’t ever come, and I’m pretty sure that I can guess a few of the reasons:

1) They aren’t sure what to expect, and fear that it could be really weird (and potentially uncomfortable).
2) They fear they may not be “good at yoga”.
3) They are wary about going into a room where “others” will see them doing something “that could be really weird” and that they may not be “good at”.
4) They don’t know the immense value of yoga, and doubt that it will be worth the time and money.

Does that cover it? In any case, if any (or all) of these reasons are the ones that are keeping you from attending a yoga class, please read on as I address each of them.

1) If you’ve never attended a yoga class, here’s what you can expect when you come to one of my classes: a peaceful, welcoming, non-competitive environment, friendly faces of other students (more on that in #3), and a knowledgeable teacher who gives specific attention and care to your needs. Beyond that…you will walk in and be greeted and asked about any physical issues that I need to know about so I can better help you, and you’ll set up your yoga mat (or if you don’t have one you’ll borrow one of mine). I usually start class with a brief period of sitting in silence to tune in.  We often chant three OMs after that (which might be weird at first, but it probably won’t after the first time, and it’s not mandatory to chant), and then I begin to guide you through a yoga practice. We always start with slower movements to “wake up” our parts, and bring more awareness into the body.  Things will gradually progress, and there will be parts of the class that are more challenging and parts that are more relaxing. Overall the whole class is meant to be therapeutic in nature as it challenges your range-of-motion, possibly your cardio, and definitely your mind. Class always ends with a resting pose that leaves you feeling refreshed and pretty euphoric. Excuse #1 can be used no longer! 🙂

2) Yoga isn’t something you can be “good” or “bad” at.  Yoga is a very personal experience.  Each person has their own set of “stuff” they come in with — old injuries, conditions, mental blocks, areas of flexibility, areas of strength, etc.  In all my years of practicing and teaching yoga I have yet to see someone who was “bad” at yoga.  So, you can’t use this excuse anymore!!!

3) The group experience of yoga is actually something really special.  When you come into a yoga class, you can be sure that each other student there has had the same fears of being judged.  We have all been there! In my yoga classes I hold a safe space for us all to be vulnerable, open, and welcomed as we are. You’ll find that over time you have a unique bond with the other folks that you are practicing alongside.

4) Yes, yoga does take time.  Yes, when you attend a class there is a fee.  If someone told you that you could increase your happiness and quality of life doing something that had absolutely no negative side effects whatsoever, how much would that be worth to you? Seriously. Each class is about 90 minutes. Would you agree that taking 90 minutes out of your week (which consists of 10,080 minutes) which is .89% of your weekly minutes to do something that’s actually fun, therapeutic mentally and physically, brings great health benefits, and deepens your awareness and gratitude for life IS an AMAZING TRADE-OFF?! As for cost, it’s the same issue of VALUE.  Most people mindlessly spend way more than the cost of a yoga class on things like alcohol, candy, junk food, lottery tickets, soda, coffee, clothes, impulse buys at the check-out stand, or amazon.  A yoga class might cost you the equivalent of a coffee drink and a danish once a week, which tastes great in the moment, but the positive effects wear off immediately, and the negative effects are potentially much more long-lasting. It’s not even a fair question of which is the better for you. So when it comes to cost, maybe re-framing it this way helps.  Another way to look at it is this: Yoga is Preventative Care that saves you a lot of money in doctor bills and meds in the long run.

I know that the majority of people have probably never attended a yoga class. I hope that my words have helped to persuade you to try something that is so AMAZINGLY beneficial and FUN!  I’ve heard from many students over the years that coming to yoga class is one of the highlights of their week, and I am so grateful to be a facilitator of something so awesome! If you have been touched at all by this article, please reach out to me: sacredspaceyoga@gmail.com, or 349-4986.  I would love to answer any questions you have about yoga, and if you are someone who truly values yoga, but can not afford it at this time in your life, I am always open to talking about solutions for that (work-trade, discounts, etc.).

I offer a special for New Yoga Students — $30 for 30 days. After that most folks buy a package of 4 classes for $48, which makes it $12 per class.  If you only want to come to one class, it’s $15.

I teach TWO classes a week:
~ Tuesdays at 6:30pm @ Sacred Space &
~ Saturdays at 10am @ City Park behind the Farmer’s Market.

I also offer a special for New Massage Clients — 2 massages for $100 (1 Thai massage, and 1 other of your choice).  Massage and Yoga compliment one another very well, especially if you have an area of difficulty that we can work on in yoga class and in bodywork sessions.

Private Yoga Sessions are also an option! Just call to set up a Consultation! 349-4986

What’s Thai Massage, You Say?

Thai Massage is the ancient healing bodywork of Thailand. It involves acupressure, compression, and deep facilitated stretching, and it’s based on wisdom much like that of traditional Chinese medicine. There are many sen (also called lines, or channels) in the body that correspond to the different organs and systems of the human body, so not only does it feel good, but when you receive a Thai massage your whole self (including all the body systems) is getting a serious tune-up.  It sounds interesting, but I haven’t quite got you yet, right? Well, it’s a little hard to explain, but it’s relaxing and energizing all at the same time.  One of my clients described it as “the best of yoga and massage.”

Thai massage is performed on the floor (on a very comfortable massage mat!), and the receiver is full clothed the entire time.  Often time, people who are uncomfortable taking their clothes off feel a sense of security knowing that they don’t have to.  The massage itself is deep and rhythmic.  In my opinion as a massage therapist, this kind of bodywork is better at addressing some issues where particular body parts are very stuck, and the inflexibility is what’s causing the pain. In cases like this I often suggest to clients that they try Thai massage, and in every situation that I’ve encountered the client has left my office with much greater range of motion, less pain, and an overall feeling of energy and ease. This Summer I’m offering a Special for New Massage Clients: $100 for 2 massages (1 hour of Thai, and 1 hour of your choice). If you have any questions, or if you’d like to schedule a Thai Massage, please feel free to contact me through the form below, or by phone: 349-4986.

Meet Piriformis

I love all the variations of Pigeon Pose, but that’s not the reason I use some variance of it in almost EVERY yoga class that I teach. One of the major target areas in the pose is the lateral rotators of the hip. One of them is pretty famous. Have you met Piraformis yet? Even if you don’t know her by name, I’m almost positive you’ve felt her presence. Especially if you’ve ever attempted any form of #Ekapadarajakapotasana.
The reason this group of six muscles is so important is because they get a LOT of use, and not a lot of thanks. Any time that you walk, run, jump, turn a leg out, or do Urdhva Dhanurasana, you are using them. These muscles are balanced by the inner thighs, but unfortunately there aren’t as many instances where we use the inner thighs in our daily lives. (Tips for strengthening those coming soon in another post!)
TO1-Figure-7
Since we are so demanding of our lateral rotators, it becomes even more important to S-T-R-E-T-C-H them! All of the pigeon variations, and any other poses that include forward bending with a bent knee and externally rotate the thigh are really great for targeting the piriformis, and the other 5 lateral rotators. Baddha Konasana, Thread the Needle, and Happy Baby to name a few.
One thing to be keenly aware of as you’re attempting any of these types of hip-opening poses is the placement and actions of your feet. Keeping the front foot (or both feet in symmetrical poses) flexed and ankle(s) engaged will protect the knees from straining, so that the stretch is directed into hip.  In comparison to the hip joint, which involves large bones and several strong muscles to hold it in place, the knee is a very unstable joint which is built more for agility, and not so much stability; therefore, especially when the hips are tighter, it is imperative to pay attention to the articulation of the feet!
Yoga can make such a significant, positive improvement in the quality of one’s life, but good alignment is of utmost importance.  The feet play a very important role in the safety and efficacy of hip-opening asanas (postures), but there are many other pieces of the puzzle, too — like making sure that your sacrum is in the appropriate place so that you don’t injure your lower back, knowing when to sit up vs. bending forward (and how much), as well as proper action of the legs, and placement of the groins. My recommendation is that you come to a yoga class (wink! wink!). But seriously, a great yoga teacher is worth way more than the national average cost of a yoga class ($10-20)!  How much do you value your well-being?
If you’d like to learn more about how Yoga can help you with hip and/or lower back pain, I would love to see you for my next Therapeutic Yoga for Hips workshop coming up…

Sacred Space Yoga, Massage & Birth Services

Sacred Space Yoga, Massage & Birth Services offers a wide variety of services for the greater Lander community, including Yoga classes (group and private) and Massage Therapy (for non pregnant folks).

Sacred Space offers several services for Pregnancy, Birth, and Beyond…

Prenatal Yoga – Tuesdays at 5:00pm – CALL AHEAD TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE
Yoga helps to relieve many of the uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy, tones your body to make birthing easier, and gives you many tools to help during labor (like breathing exercises, focusing techniques, etc.)

Prenatal, Labor & Postpartum Massage
Massage is GREAT for helping to deal with all of the discomforts of pregnancy, can help with pain management during labor, and is very helpful postpartum to bring the body back to it’s pre-pregnancy alignment. To learn more about how beneficial massage is for this period of life, read more about Nurturing the Mother Pregnancy Massage here: http://clairemariemiller.com/what-is-pregnancy-massage

Natural Childbirth Preparation Course
This course contains valuable information on how to have a natural childbirth, yoga/relaxation practices for help with normal pregnancy discomforts, nutrition for a healthy pregnancy, labor techniques/positions for moms and their partners, as well as massage for newborns and infants.

Doula Services
A doula, or a professional labor assistant, provides physical and emotional support to a woman and her partner during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

For instance, a doula might offer:

Suggestions on pain relief techniques, such as breathing, labor positioning and massage
Emotional reassurance, comfort and encouragement
Information about what’s happening during labor and the postpartum period
Assistance with breast-feeding
Guidance and support for loved ones

Often, however, a doula’s most important role is to provide continuous support during labor and delivery. Although research is limited, some studies have shown that continuous support from doulas during childbirth might be associated with:

A decreased use of pain relief medication during labor
A decreased incidence of C-sections and forceps deliveries
A less difficult childbirth experience

Placenta Encapsulation Services
The placenta contains oxytocin, a hormone that reduces pain and increases bonding with baby, it also contains thyroid stimulating hormones, interferon and prolactin, which can boost the immune system and milk supply. – See more at: http://www.mamanatural.com/why-eat-your-own-placenta/#sthash.quI5yyeV.dpuf
